Media Statement on the passing of UOB Chairman Emeritus and Honorary Adviser Dr Wee Cho Yaw

The Singapore Business Federation (SBF) is saddened to learn of the passing of UOB Chairman Emeritus, Honorary Adviser and Singapore banking tycoon Dr Wee Cho Yaw. Dr Wee is a titan in the business community and contributed immensely to the growth of Singapore’s banking sector. We mourn the loss of one of Singapore’s most successful entrepreneurs.

Dr Wee is a well-respected and celebrated Singapore businessman. He represented the interests of Singapore businesses in his roles as President of the Singapore Chinese Chamber of Commerce (SCCC) from 1969-1973, founding president of the Singapore Federation of Chinese Clan Associations (SFCCA) from 1985 to 2010, and head of the Hokkien Huay Kuan from 1972 to 2010.

Under his leadership, UOB grew to be one of Singapore’s top banks with a strong regional presence within ASEAN. UOB continues to be an active supporter of the growth of Singapore businesses and has worked with SBF on several projects including the Singapore Apex Business Summit, Singapore Regional Business Forum, ASEAN Conference, GlobalConnect@SBF and many others. Their generous support has helped many SMEs establish a foothold in the region.

On behalf of the business community, SBF extends its deepest condolences to Mr Wee Ee Cheong, Deputy Chairman and CEO of UOB and family. Our thoughts are with them during this difficult time.
