  • More than 200 Singapore business representatives met some 74 leading Vietnamese state-owned enterprises at the business networking session

Singapore, Tuesday, 17 November 2009 - The Singapore business community was privileged to receive an update on Vietnam's economic and investment policies by Vietnam President His Excellency Nguyen Minh Triet. This event organized by the Singapore Business Federation (SBF) is entitled SBF Eminent Leaders Lecture: "Vietnam: Partnership for Progress". The lecture and business networking session was held in conjunction with the state visit of the President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, who was here to attend the APEC Leaders Summit. President Triet's keynote address to the local business community was chaired by Senior Minister and Coordinating Minister for National Security Professor S. Jayakumar.

During his welcome remarks, SBF Chairman Mr. Tony Chew said, "The Singapore Business Federation is the apex business chamber representing more than 15,000 companies in Singapore. In partnership with the Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry, SBF has successfully organized the Singapore - Vietnam Business Networking Congress' this morning, which brought together 83 senior executives from 74 Vietnam companies, and 225 Singapore business leaders from various business sectors. We hope that the networking and contacts made this morning will bring new partnerships and collaborations between our business communities."

"As a testament of our growing business linkage, I am pleased to announce that we will be witnessing the signing of three business collaborations between Vietnam companies and Singapore based companies later. The Singapore entities are Port of Singapore Authority, Japan Land Limited which is a Japanese owned company listed on the Singapore Stock Exchange, and Credit Suisse Singapore," Mr. Chew added.

At the Singapore-Vietnam Business Networking Congress 2009, held earlier in the morning, our businessmen networked with high-level Vietnam government and business representatives to identify business opportunities in trade, projects, consultancy and investment.

Two hundred and twenty-five Singapore company representatives met 74 key organizations from Vietnam's public and private sectors, which comprise government officials and agencies, business leaders and business associations. The list of organizations includes PETROVIETNAM, PETROLIMEX, Tan Tao Energy Corp., Vietnam Rubber Group, Vinafood, Doji Gold & Gems, Vinacafe Corp, Ben Thanh Group, Vietnam National Coal, Kien Gang Sea Product and Dragon Land. The networking session was a useful platform for SBF members to develop contacts and build rapport with the Vietnam officials for future collaboration opportunities.

"With a determined Government and committed leaders, from both the public and private sectors, Vietnam has been ranked as one obvious rising star in the APEC region. In 2008, Singapore was Vietnam's fifth largest trading partner, with total Singapore-Vietnam trade growing to S$15.6 billion. Vietnam fully supports APEC?s initiatives and has benefitted from various APEC capacity building programs to liberalize its market, and facilitate growth in both trade and investments to realise the Bogor Goals which are the fundamental spirit and vision of APEC. Vietnam has been identified by many businesses in the region as one of the most promising and preferred destinations for trade and investments. The lecture by President Triet is a golden opportunity to listen to, engage in and interact with Vietnam leaders and trade delegates under one roof here in Singapore," said Mr. Teng Theng Dar, CEO, SBF who spoke at the Networking Congress.

The SBF Eminent Leaders Lecture: "Vietnam: Partnership for Progress" event is the inaugural event for the SBF Eminent Leaders Lecture series. It is the premier platform for eminent government and business leaders to share their thoughts and experiences with the Singapore business community touching principally on the key business and economic issues of the day.

    SBF's engagement of Vietnam

SBF is working closely with ISEAS to profile and introduce Singapore companies to business opportunities arising in Vietnam's 63 provinces through the "New Growth Areas in Vietnam" Seminar series. This seminar series aims to bring Singapore businesses to explore opportunities beyond Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi and will highlight and introduce the up and coming provinces in Vietnam. Many of these provinces have excellent potential and can provide Singapore businesses with plenty of growth opportunities. The series kicked off earlier this year with Seminars on Phu Yen Province and Hai Phong Province in March; and Dalat City-Lam Dong province in July. Upcoming seminars on new growth areas in Vietnam will feature Phu Tho province, Thua Tien-Hue province and so on. A seminar on Da Nang City and province is in the pipeline for early 2010. For 2010, SBF is also planning to mount business missions to Vietnam to follow up on the seminars organized in Singapore.
