SBF, SMa and ASME jointly led a business mission to Guangxi, China from 18 to 25 October.
Singapore, Monday, 26 October 2009 - As part of the efforts to help companies cultivate stronger business ties and facilitate more Singapore-Guangxi joint collaborations, Singapore Business Federation (SBF), Singapore Manufacturers' Federation (SMa), and Association of Small & Medium Enterprises (ASME) jointly led a business mission to Guangxi, China, from 18 to 25 October. The mission was one of the three key business events to boost Singapore-Guangxi business relations.
Taking place in six cities - Qinzhou, Pingxiang, Nanning, Beihai, Laibin, and Chongzuo.- from 18 to 25 October 2009, the eight-day business mission to Guangxi, Zhuang Autonomous Region, China, was supported by the International Enterprise (IE) Singapore and Singapore Chamber of Commerce and Industry in China (SingCham).
Led by Mr. Poh Choon Ann (傅春安), Chairman of China Business Committee of SMa and Vice-chairman of China Business Group of SBF, and deputy mission leader, Ms Dorothy Seet Poh Kim (薛宝金), Chairman of the Singapore Chamber of Commerce and Industry in China, the business mission aimed to enrich Singapore companies with first-hand knowledge of Guangxi's business opportunities and to foster closer business ties between both sides.
Mr. Poh led 42 Singapore delegates from 37 companies, representing sectors such as manufacturing, logistics, construction, trading and services to engage in various business meetings with their Guangxi counterparts and potential business partners. Some key features of the business mission include networking sessions with Guangxi leaders; briefings by local government officials, business matching sessions and site visits to local companies.
The Singapore delegates also visited the 6th CAEXPO from 20 to 24 October in Nanning, Guangxi. This is the fourth consecutive year that SBF has been appointed by the Ministry of Trade & Industry to lead Singapore's participation at the CAEXPO since its third edition in 2006. Standing at almost 200 square meters, the Singapore Pavilion at the 6th CAEXPO showcased Singapore's customs and business cooperation, and her attributes as an international trade and distribution hub. In addition, 11 Singapore exhibitors, including SBF, were represented at the Commodity Trade Pavilion (please refer to the full list of participants under Annex).
Singapore was presented with two awards by the 2009 CAEXPO Organizing Committee, namely the
"Best Exhibition Award" and "Best Trade Visitor Organizer Award".
Happening concurrently at the CAEXPO on 21 and 22 October was the 6th China-ASEAN Business & Investment Summit (CABIS or中国-东盟商务与投资峰会) on the theme "China-ASEAN Free Trade Area and ASEAN Integration : Cooperation for Mutual Development". SBF CEO, Mr. Teng Theng Dar (邓腾达) delivered the keynote address on the topic - "China-ASEAN Free Trade Area - Market opening and new business opportunitie".
Mr. Teng briefed CABIS participants on how business communities are set to benefit through the platform of CAEXPO, which will boost the development of China-ASEAN economic cooperation. The China-Singapore Free Trade Area was implemented from January 2009, and more ASEAN companies including Singapore are likely to benefit from this initiative.
Guangxi business mission leader Mr. Poh Choon Ann said "The importance of Guangxi being China's gateway to ASEAN and vice-versa has not been fully exploited by our businessmen" He noted that Singapore SMEs, particularly the manufacturing and services sectors, can look to the second and third tier China cities in the Beibu Gulf for good opportunities.
Based on feedback gathered by SBF, total sales confirmed at the CAEXPO was S$1,100,000, while sales under negotiation was S$ 2,150,000. The expected sales over the next 12 months is S$ 6,150,000.

The CAEXPO is co-sponsored by the Ministry of Commerce of China and the respective ministries of trade and industry of the 10 ASEAN countries as well as the ASEAN Secretariat; and organized by the People’s Government of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region of China. It is a high profile event aiming to fuel the establishment of China-ASEAN Free Trade Area by 2010 and a platform for bilateral cooperation in the field of trade, investment and tourism.
