Singapore, Thursday, 7 May 2009 – The Singapore Business Federation (SBF) and the Singapore Chapter of The Indus Entrepreneurs (TiE) today organised a first-ever seminar and networking session for Singapore companies and a visiting delegation from TiE Kerala, India.
51 local business representatives from the various manufacturing and services sectors –– were made aware of business opportunities in Kerala, India by Mr. C. Balagopal, President of the TiE Kerala, who led the business delegation to Singapore. Participants were apprised of opportunities in agri-business, high-tech medical products, auto components and distribution, IT services, tourism and hospitality, organic faming and plantations, financial services and education. This seminar, organized by the SBF India Business Group, is part of the Group’s ongoing efforts to help members network, gain market insights and tap into opportunities in the burgeoning India market.
Through this networking session, Singapore companies are able to tap on the business experience of TiE’s board of established entrepreneurs. According to Mr. Balagopal, TiE Kerala’s delegation member companies have a business turnover of over INR 23 billion, employ more than 11,500 people and are looking to expand their business.
He also updated the participants on the Kerala’s current economic landscape, which is now poised to play a part in the global economy. He pointed out Kerala’s strengths in the areas of tourism & hospitality, horitculture, value-added spice products, IT services and healthcare. SMEs in the tourism and leisure sector are blossoming in the state and the IT and farm business sector are not far behind. In addition, an educated workforce complements the feasibility of high tech ventures.
SBF CEO, Mr. Teng Theng Dar said during his welcome address, “We are very encouraged that Singapore businesses have turned their radar on the Indian market. Success stories of joint ventures between Singapore and Indian companies exist in almost all business sectors. For instance, National Aviation Company of India Ltd (NACIL), the parent company of Air India, entered into a 50-50 joint venture with Singapore Air Terminal Services (SATS) to provide ground handling services at major Indian airports, including New Delhi and Mumbai. We hope that these success stories will provide the impetus for Singapore entrepreneurs to do business with their Indian counterparts.”
“As the national apex chamber in Singapore, the Singapore Business Federation aims to facilitate more such success stories of engaging the India market. Today’s networking session here at SBF signals our intent to organize Enterprise Exchange platforms to help create and generate new business-to-business deals and business-for-business linkages for Singapore and Indian enterprises,” Mr. Teng added.
