SBF members contribute over S$200,000 for cyclone and earthquake relief efforts

Singapore, Thursday, 10 July 2008 - An appeal by, Singapore Business Federation (SBF) this May to its staff and member companies to contribute to the Singapore Red Cross' (SRC) relief efforts for the survivors of cyclone Nargis in Myanmar and the Sichuan earthquake in China has raised a sum of S$200, 683

Responding to the urgent need for shelter, food and water in Myanmar, the SRC had purchased emergency relief items such as 1,000 family tents, 35,000 food packs, over 1 million water purification tablets and 10 hand-powered water filtration systems. These items were received by SRC's liaison officers in Myanmar, who have personally handed them to the Myanmar Red Cross Society (MRCS) for distribution to survivors of the disaster. In addition, the SRC had also purchased and sent S$200,000 worth of ready-to-eat food packs in China, to be delivered to the Red Cross Society of China.

The appeal garnered a sum of $200,683 from 97 member companies, as well as staff of SBF, which was handed over in two separate amounts to the Red Cross on 17 June 2008 and 1 July 2008 respectively.

The breakdown of donations is as follows:

Myanmar - S$98,599.00
China - S$100,834.00
Others (direct to Red Cross) - S$1,250.00

Grand Total - S$200, 683.00
