Call for Feedback: Singapore - EU Free Trade Agreement & Proposed Expansion of Trans – Pacific Strategic Economic Partnership Agreement
|
|
Singapore is scheduled to commerce negotiations on the Singapore - European Union (EU) Free Trade Agreement and Trans-Pacific Strategic Economic Partnership Agreement in March 2010.
(i) Singapore – EU Free Trade Agreement
Singapore and the EU will initiate negotiations in March with a view to concluding a Free Trade Agreement (FTA). The EU is Singapore’s largest investor. Singapore was the EU’s largest trading partner in 2008 and also its largest trading partner amongst all ASEAN states.
If successful, the FTA will allow greater market access and investment protection for Singapore companies venturing into the EU.

(ii) Proposed Expansion of Trans – Pacific Strategic Economic Partnership Agreement (TPP)
The Trans – Pacific Strategic Economic Partnership Agreement (TPP) is a FTA between Brunei, Chile, New Zealand and Singapore. It now has the potential of expanding to an 8 – country FTA, with Australia, Peru, United States and Vietnam joining the original four members.
If the TPP is expanded, it may well pave the way for a larger FTA of the Asia Pacific, and create new economic opportunities for Singapore.
