Credit is an indispensable function in commerce, freeing up cashflows for activities like production, sales and business expansion. Administered badly, credit can translate into a financial predicament for companies.
According to Euler Hermes, the world’s leading credit insurer, the overall decrease in global corporate insolvencies numbers from 2010-2012 are not yet sufficient to offset against the record insolvencies of 2008 and 2009.
Globally, we are witnessing events that amplify our credit exposure. The contagion from Greece, Ireland, Portugal, Spain and Italy create plummeting sentiments into Asia. The recent budget and debt ceiling issues in the US has also created much currency exchange tensions for enterprises dealing with the US market.
Closer to home, countries like Vietnam, China, Taiwan and the Philippines are also targeting for reductions in their fiscal deficits. Additionally, tightening monetary policies are causing regional credit growths to slow in economies like PRC and Hong Kong. These policies inevitably create higher costs of capital for borrowers.
As the Asia Pacific region is interdependent and interconnected to the rest of the world, one cannot expect to enjoy the benefits of global trade without associated risks.
The premier Credit Management Leadership Forum 2011 will initiate with identifying opportunities and key trends within the current economic outlook, move into the latest advances in the credit landscape and mature into a discussion of tools and technology that will create a successful biosphere for effective credit management.
