Slated as an engine of Asia’s growth, India is not a market to be missed. It is the world’s seventh largest country and the second most populous. India has also modernised itself into one of the world’s most important emerging markets. In 2010, India is Singapore’s 10th largest trading partner with total trade amounting to S$30.7 billion, up from S$21.6 billion in 2009. Singapore is a party to two Agreements with India; the India – Singapore Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement (CECA), and the ASEAN-India FTA (AIFTA).

Since coming into force in 1 August 2005, the India – Singapore CECA has reduced tariffs and given businesses in both countries greater market access. Singapore exporters stand to benefit from CECA as it reduces import duties on a vast range of products. Some sectors include electrical and electronics, instrumentation, pharmaceuticals, chemicals and plastics.

The Trade in Goods Agreement under the ASEAN-India Free Trade Area (AIFTA) came into force on 1 January 2010, covering 90% of the tariff lines of approximately 5,000 items traded between ASEAN and India (at the 6-digit HS level). Sectors which stand to benefit include chemicals, plastics and base metals, among others.

Companies are encouraged to attend this seminar to understand more about the potential benefits under the India-Singapore CECA and the ASEAN-India FTA.
