Singapore's national goal of achieving a workplace fatality reduction of 50% by 2018 presents a unique opportunity - and special challenge - to organizations committed to safety excellence. Even for organizations that already excel at safety, serious injury events require a different level of strategy; low injury rates themselves do not accurately predict the exposure to serious or fatal events.

The Workplace Safety and Health Act (WSH Act) was effected on 1 March 2006 to cultivate good safety habits in all individuals so as to engender a strong safety culture in our workplace. It emphasised the importance of managing workplace safety and health proactively by requiring stakeholders to take reasonably practicable measures to ensure the safety and health of workers and other people that are affected by the work being carried out.

This talk will draw on the learnings of more than 2,600 sites around the world to provide insight into the special needs of serious event reduction, presents the role of culture and leadership with respect to safety, and discusses considerations and implications for businesses committed to safety excellence.

In addition, there will be presentation on the bizSAFE Programme and Risk Management Assistance Fund (RMAF) from the Workplace Safety and Health Council (WSHC) which both are introduced to help SMEs build their risk management capabilities in their workplaces, thus improving overall Workplace Safety and Health performance.
