Introduction

Funding to Help Your Business to Ascertain Ability to Ensure Continuity of your Operations in the Event of a Flu Outbreak

After the Influenza A H1N1 outbreak in April 2009, many enterprises now see flu pandemic as a threat to business continuity. This programme is to help Singapore-based enterprises prepare to deal with the flu pandemic situation. It is also a stepping stone to encourage businesses to move towards full adoption of Business Continuity Management (BCM).

This event seeks to introduce this programme, managed by the Singapore Business Federation (SBF) with funding support from SPRING Singapore. This programe will help enterprises ascertain their ability to ensure continuity of their business operations in the event of a flu outbreak. Their preparedness to weather adversity will help give enterprises a competitive edge in this volatile business climate.

Our hospitals are prepared for a flu outbreak but what about our enterprises?

"HOSPITALS are on their guard for a possible second wave of Influenza A (H1N1), even as the number of cases dips. Infectious disease experts estimate that the first wave infected about 700,000 people here. This means more than four-fifths of the population have still not been exposed to the virus."

- The Straits Times, 5 September 2009.

"The private sector needs to partner the Government to help sustain the economy and provide essential services to the population. Planning for a pandemic requires businesses to think about issues beyond those that they will consider in normal continuity planning. For example, unlike many emergencies, a pandemic may have prolonged effects on the delivery of many third-party services which businesses take for granted, such as postal and transport services.

Due to its global nature, a pandemic will likely impact the flow of goods in and out of Singapore. Measures taken by the Government will ease but not eliminate many of the disruptions that businesses will face. Financial hardship will be likely but it can be significantly mitigated with a comprehensive Business Continuity Plan."
