The Singapore Business Federation (SBF) in collaboration with the Institute of Southeast Asian Studies and Lam Dong People's Committee aims to update Singapore companies on the business opportunities and challenges on doing business in Lam Dong Province of Vietnam.

ABOUT LAM DONG PROVINCE

Lam Dong province is located in southeastern Vietnam and east of Cambodia. With a population of close to 1.2 million and an area of 9,800 sq km, it is a highlands plateau province. It is about 320km away from Ho Chi Minh City, and on average between 800-1000m above sea level. Much of this highland is in the temperate climate zone, and average temperatures range between 18-25 degrees Celsius around the year. Forests, which has many pine and bamboo trees, cover 70% of Lam Dong's land area. The province has an international airport where aircrafts like A320 and A321 can land, and direct flights with Singapore, the regional aviation hub, could be opened next year.

The geographic peculiarity of Lam Dong has produced an important landmark - Da Lat, and famous agricultural products. When they first colonized Vietnam, the French earmarked Da Lat, Lam Dong's capital, to be the rest area for French governors and the last Vietnamese king, given the cool, temperate climate. Da Lat has long been a famous tourist destination for Vietnamese, and is easily accessed by the international airport that is 30km away. With Da Lat as its flagship and the beauty of its natural scenery embodied by its many lakes, Lam Dong has huge potential for tourism. In addition, minerals and agricultural products are also the mainstay of the Lam Dong economy. Soil in Lam Dong is suitable for planting of coffee (eg. Trung Nguyen coffee products), tea, mulberry, cashew plants, and flowers – all for exports. Lam Dong has large forest reserves that offer timber products; large reserves of mineral resources such as bauxite; precious stones such as opal and gold; granite and stones for construction.

Much potential exist for synergy between the two economies of Singapore and Lam Dong.
