The ASEAN countries are close to agreement on the implementation of an International Customs Transit System. The objective is to ease current procedures for moving goods to and from and through the border posts, ports and airports of the ASEAN countries.

Such a system will provide a simplified but controlled environment for the movement of goods from, e.g., Vietnam through Thailand and Malaysia to and from Singapore. It is a main pillar towards the ASEAN Economic Community, to be established by 2015, where goods must move freely if the single market and production base is to work.

The ASEAN countries are assisted in their efforts by the ASEAN-EU Programme for Regional Integration Support - Phase II (APRIS II). In collaboration with APRIS II, SBF is organising a workshop to brief companies involved in the movement of goods across the ASEAN region as these companies will need to have a clear understanding of what is planned in terms of operational customs practice.

Two experts from the ASEAN-EU team, Mr Gordon Linington and Mr Des Grimble, will brief the business community on the proposals and the position reached so far in the drive towards the free movement of goods within the ASEAN region. The experts will be available after the workshop to meet companies wishing to learn more of the precise details.
