A new paradigm in manufacturing is in the making. The manufacturing industry is in the process of being reengineered with a focus on resource and energy efficiency. Sustainable manufacturing refers to the creation of manufactured products that are non-polluting, conserves energy and uses natural resources that are economically sound and safe for mankind. By practising sustainability in manufacturing, companies are able to enjoy considerable opportunities and benefits: improved profitability from reduced use of energy, water and release of hazardous substances; stronger competitive position and differentiation from their market peers.
Today's event will include a
seminar with 2 keynote presentations by Prof Nabil Nasr from Rochester Institute of Technology and Dr Alexander Steinecker from Centre Suisse d'Electronique et de Microtechnique (CSEM) and a
Remanufacturing Workshop in the afternoon. The seminar seeks to identify the business opportunities, strategies, challenges and technology deployment to help manufacturers embark on sustainable manufacturing to stay competitive and relevant.

Remanufacturing Workshop
1.30pm - 5.00pm
Training Rooms, Level 3, TOWER Block
Remanufacturing is a solution to waste reduction in manufacturing. It conserves most of the energy used in the manufacturing process and often offers components at a much lower cost relative to newly manufactured components. Leading companies in jet engines, airplanes, ships, heavy machinery and copiers have already taken remanufacturing as their core competence. With the numerous new opportunities for technological innovations in existence with the enormous economical and environmental potential, this workshop will enable companies who are keen to exploit the potential of remanufacturing better understand the industry and also to influence future research directions. Experts in this domain and representatives from companies have also been invited to share their views towards this new area.
