The Globally Harmonised System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS) is a United Nation (UN)-developed system for chemical classification and hazard communication through harmonised provisions for standardised labels and safety data sheets (SDS).Singapore’s GHS Implementation for Phase 1A on preparation of GHS SDS & label of single chemical/substance by all chemical manufacturers and suppliers is targeted at end of 2010. However, different countries are in different stages of GHS implementation. The ultimate objective of GHS is to enhance the protection of human against hazardous chemicals through harmonised communication of hazard information of chemicals, and to facilitate international trade in that all chemicals moving into and out of a country can be classified, packaged and labelled in accordance with a globally harmonised system.

All companies from any industry that manufacture, distribute, supply and use hazardous chemicals would be impacted by GHS and this is especially so for a trading nation like Singapore
