India was the first country in Asia to recognise the potential of the Export Processing Zone (EPZ) model in promoting exports and Asia's first EPZ was set up at Kandla in Gujarat in 1965. To promote investments and to stimulate sustained growth in this sector, Indian Parliament passed the Special Economic Zones Act in May 2005 and this act and the SEZ rules came into effect from February 2006. This new act and the rules have created an environment that facilitates smoother and quicker setting up and functioning of SEZ's by streamlining and simplifying the procedures involved.

Exports from SEZs in India registered a growth of 127% during the first three quarters of the present fiscal year (2009-10) when compared with the corresponding period of the previous financial year. This performance is noteworthy as it comes at a period when the global economy is only slowly recovering from a severe crisis. Approximately 500,000 persons are employed in SEZ's in India at present.

This seminar seeks to present before the business and investment community of Singapore the opportunities that are available for long term investors in this sector. The seminar will comprise three sessions covering the topics "Foreign Investment in Indian SEZ Sector - The Experience So Far", "Government and Private Initiative in the SEZ Sector" and "Logistics and the SEZ sector". Senior Government of India representatives as well as from the state governments of Gujarat, Rajasthan, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh will be making presentations during the seminar. A delegation comprising promoters from over 20 SEZs in India will be participating in the seminar and making presentations.
