About South Africa
South Africa has by far the biggest, most developed economy in Africa and is often referred to as the engine of growth for the rest of Africa. The services, mining, and manufacturing sectors make a significant contribution to the country's economy. With an estimated population of 49 million and GDP per capita (PPP) of around US$10,000 per year, South Africa ranks alongside other middle-income countries, such as Chile, Mexico, Hungary, Thailand, and Malaysia.
