With the current unprecedented global economic crisis, this year’s forum will focus on the challenges faced by today’s changed economy and how businesses should reposition themselves for emerging opportunities. Member companies can look forward to participate in interactive panel discussions and dialogues with Russian officials and key businessmen to gain valuable insights of the Russia & CIS region.
About Russia & the CIS Region
The CIS region, with a population size of more than 250 million, has experience strong economic growth with an average GDP Growth Rate of 7% in recent years. According to World Investment Report 2008, FDI inflow in the CIS region has increased exponentially from less than a billion in 1990s to a record high of more than $70 billion in 2007 indicating the rising level of confidence foreign investors have for the region. With further plans to inject new impetus ensuring stable and balanced economic growth and security, foreign investors are eager to access the fast growing consumer markets and the natural resources of CIS. Russia, however, remains the predominant political actor and strategic economic power in the CIS region.
According to IE Singapore, Russia’s GDP (PPP) achieved in 2008 was USD 2.225 trillion. Russia's strong growth for the past 9 years have encouraged Singapore companies to establish their presence in Russia in a variety of sectors such as retail, oil & gas, utilities, automotive and construction. Russia boasts of a domestic population of 140 million, growing middle-income group, and an attractive market. In fact, Singapore-Russian bilateral trade grew four-fold from S$0.88 billion in 2002, to S$3.8 billion in 2008 primarily in the automotive and oil & gas industry. There is indeed tremendous potential for trade with countries of the CIS Region.
