Sri Lanka's economy is 59.3% free, which makes it the world's 84th freest economy. It is ranked 14th out of 30 countries in the Asia-Pacific region, and its overall score is equal to the regional average.
According to the government in Dec 2007, Sri Lanka's economy grew in the 3rd quarter by a stronger-than-expected 7.0% from a year earlier, picking up from the annual pace set in the previous quarter. The added momentum from 6.4% in the 2nd quarter was generated by industry and the services sector. D.C.A. Gunawardena, Director of the Department of Census and Statistics, told Reuters that the agriculture growth was 3.7%, 7.5% (growth) for industry and 7.4% for services.
Sri Lanka's economy expanded 7.4% in 2006, its strongest performance since 1978. President Mahinda Rajapaksa forecasts it will grow by 7.5% in 2008.
